Matthew J. (Matt, House) Mehlenbacher,50, of State Route 415, passed away unexpectedly Sunday (June 11, 2023) at his home. Born in North Hornell, Nov. 29, 1972, he was the son of James and Linda Hunt Mehlenbacher. Matt resided several years in South Hornell, before moving to Bath. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1991, and received his Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York at Oneonta. While at Oneonta, he played Rugby and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was employed as an Associate Executive Director at the Arc of Allegany-Steuben in Bath. He received the Employee of the Year Award as well as special recognition for his 30 years of Service to the Arc of Allegany-Steuben. Thru the years, Matt coached basketball for the Special Olympics and was an advisor to the “Incredible Angels” Self- Advocacy Group.
Matt was well known in all the Masonic Lodges throughout Steuben County. He was a member and current Master of Morning Star Lodge # 65 in Canisteo and Past Master of Evening Star Lodge # 44 in Hornell. He was a member and past Patron of the former Ivanhoe Chapter # 210 Order of Eastern Star in Hornelland current Patron of Unity Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Bath. Matt was past District Deputy Grand Master for the Steuben District, Masonic Lodge from 2014-2016. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Bath, past President and Vice President of the Bath Youth Football and Cheerleading League and currently served as League Representative. He had coached football at Alfred State for over 10 years and youth football for over 10 years.
Matt was predeceased by his father, James Mehlenbacher; stepfather, Leon Brisbee; cousins, Joseph and Michael Dye; Aunt and Uncle, Gordon and Mildred Dye; and father-in-law Craig Vosburgh.
Surviving are his wife Rachel Vosburgh Mehlenbacher and two children, James and Katia Mehlenbacher at home; his mother, Linda Mehlenbacher of Hornell; his sister Dianna (Scott) Tuttle of Dansville; four nieces and one nephew, Casey(Dustin)Mehlenbacher, Andrew (Amanda) Mehlenbacher, Lacey (Gary) Freas, Ashley (Matt) Tuttle and Amanda Tuttle; sister-in-law Katie (Robert) Friedl of Albion; brother-in-law Eric (Lacey) Vosburgh of Painted Post; and sister-in-law Wendy (Brad) Harris of Glenville; and many young nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
There will be no formal calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday July 1, 2023 from 1 PM until 4 PM at the Bath Masonic Lodge located on the Fairgrounds. Please use the Chestnut Street entrance to the Fairgrounds. An Order of Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 4 PM followed by a Masonic Memorial Service. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Campbell.
