Obituary for Wayne Harrington

Wayne H. Harrington

Wayne H. Harrington, 77, of Allison Park, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017, following a brief illness. Born in North Hornell, NY, Wayne was the son of the late Hubert H. Harrington and Thelma (Baker) Harrington. He graduated from Arkport Central School, Alfred University with a BS in Ceramic Engineering, Cleveland State University with a MS in Chemistry, Vanderbilt University with a PHD in bio-chemistry.
After serving in the military at Ft. Sill, OK, Wayne traveled in various places around the world, working in several capacities in the chemical engineering/biochemistry fields, also writing numerous publications and receiving awards for his work. A significant part of his career was spent working for the UN World Health Organization, focusing on dealing with new and emerging health challenges due to changing disease patterns, globalization and urbanization. The Malaysian Ministry of Health, the Solomon Administration and the Thailand Government were some of agencies with which Wayne collaborated on proper chemical waste handling and disposal.
After retirement, intent on keeping active, Wayne worked for the New Orleans, LA School District as a computer network technician until the Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005 ended that position. After traveling, visiting friends and family, he settled in the Pittsburgh, PA area. He enjoyed his cats, music, computer design and building, mechanical repair, furniture restoration, and yard work. He also enjoyed spending quiet time with his “best girl” Betty, and teaching his grandchildren how to build a “real” volcano for middle school science class.
Wayne is survived by his sons, Timothy and Brian (Nancy), grandchildren Timothy Jr., Michael, Meghan, Andrew, and Kevin, sister Maryellen (Dwight) Haynes, nieces Linda and Judith, several cousins, and his beloved friend and companion, Betty.
